Irish Immigrants in Michigan: A History in Stories
Pat Commins of Dublin, Ireland and Elizabeth Rice of Michigan have compiled true stories of Irish immigrants to Michigan in the 19th century-one story from each of Michigan's 83 counties-in order to share the history of these people who made their way to Michigan to begin new lives. You are invited to come to listen to the story of this county and others. Ireland is a country of incredible beauty. In the 1800s, Ireland was also a land of dire poverty and oppression for most of the people living there. When the potato crop, the staple food for most of the Irish people failed for many years in succession, unrelenting hunger became another aspect of daily life. For thousands of Irish people, a decision had to be made: should we go or should we stay?
