Another Win, Record Books within Sight
Now 15 wins in their last 20, the Loons set sights on 2010 team
MIDLAND, Mich. – The moniker “Best in the Midwest” is not something that is easy to achieve. But the Great Lakes Loons continue their torrid pace during the 2019 season with yet another victory, this time 6-4 against the Fort Wayne TinCaps to open a four-game homestand at Dow Diamond on Tuesday.
The Loons have now won 15 of their last 20 games and hold the best overall record in all of the Midwest League (65-39). With that kind of mark as we inch closer to August, the mind begins to wander.
The 2010 team had the best regular season in franchise history by going 90-49. This year’s Loons would need to finish 26-7 to break the single-season record for wins or go 24-9 to finish with the highest win percentage in team history. They would need to finish 17-16 to best 2009 as the franchise’s second-winningest season.
It was a team effort to build a 5-0 lead entering the final three frames before Fort Wayne made things interesting pulling within a run, but Leonel Valera tried to steal the show. Still just 20 years old and already in his four season in the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league system, the Venezuelan went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI.
Jacob Amaya also drove in two runs batting cleanup, while Kody Hoese and Jair Camargo added doubles.
Somewhat overshadowed by the early offensive outburst and impressive win-loss record for the team entering the game, was the fact that Ryan Pepiot and Zach Willeman (W, 2-3) combined to carry a no-hitter into the 6th inning. Pepiot pitched two hitless innings to begin the game, before Willeman pushed the tension to two outs in the 6th before allowing a base hit to Agustin Ruiz.
Justin Bruihl (H, 2) and Aaron Ochsenbein (SV, 1) combined to shut out the TinCaps over the final 2.2 innings to ensure it was yet another tick in the win column for these impressive Loons.
