Loons Shut Out on Opening Night
Loons pitching walk eight, Captains’ Oviedo goes five scoreless

Eastlake, Ohio – The Great Lakes Loons opened the 2019 season with a 4-0 loss to the Lake County Captains at a cold and damp Classic Park on Thursday night.

Captains’ starter Luis Ovideo set the tone for the night as the 19-year-old right-handed prospect threw five scoreless innings, allowing just four baserunners while striking out five. Ovideo (W, 1-0) is a top-10 prospect in the Cleveland Indians organization and finished with a 1.88 ERA with rookie Mahoning Valley last season.

After Ovideo departed the game, the Loons’ offensive struggles continued against the combination of Aaron Pinto and Dakody Clemmer. The Loons finished with five hits and two walks offensively.

While the Captains were spinning zeros on the scoreboard, the Loons’ pitching staff struggled to throw strikes. Stephen Kolek got the Opening Day nod and was pulled after 2 2/3 innings. Kolek (L, 0-1) ceded four runs (three earned) on four walks and four hits. Walks became a theme for Loons pitchers as Alfredo Tavarez and Joel Inoa both walked two out of the bullpen.

Central Michigan University product Dan Robinson was a lone standout offensively for Great Lakes. The Grosse Pointe Woods native finished 1-for-2 with the only two walks drawn by the Loons.

The Loons and Captains finish the front end of a four-game home-and-home series on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EDT. Righty Andre Jackson goes for the Loons and the Captains counter with left-hander Raymond Burgos. Radio coverage dawns at 6:00 p.m. with Brad Tunney and Blake Froling.

The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team’s inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team’s home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
