|BAY CITY, MICH – McLaren Bay Region is celebrating National Stroke Awareness Month with a number of free education and health screening events.
National Stroke Awareness Month was founded in May of 1989 to promote public awareness with the goal of helping to reduce the incidence of stroke in the United States. For every minute a stroke is left untreated, millions of brain cells die. Promptly recognizing the signs and symptoms of a stroke is critical.
In honor of this important month, McLaren Bay Region will host two Facebook Live events to discuss awareness and prevention. On May 12, 2021 at 5:30 p.m., Dr. Brad Blaker will discuss BE FAST, a tool used for stroke identification, and what symptoms to look for:
Balance: sudden loss of balance; Eyes: sudden trouble seeing; Face: uneven or crooked smile; Arms: arm hanging down; Speech: slurred or drooling; Terrible Headache & Time: sudden onset of headache
“My focus is to provide community education regarding the warning signs and clinical findings of a stroke, and when to seek treatment,” said Dr. Blaker, Medical Director of the McLaren Bay Region Emergency Department. “We will also discuss the benefits of early recognition and the emergent use of the 9-1-1 system to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients who may be experiencing stroke-like symptoms.”
On May 26, 2021 at 5:30 p.m., Dr. Khalil Nasrallah, Neurologist at McLaren Bay Region, will discuss risk factors you can control, treat and improve in order to reduce your risk of a stroke.
“Each year, 15 million stokes occur worldwide, 80% of which could have been prevented,” said Grace Rodriguez, RN, MSN, Stroke Program Coordinator at McLaren Bay Region. "In the U.S., someone experiences a stroke every 40 seconds. It is the number one cause of disability."
McLaren Bay Region will also host a Heart Health & Stroke Screening on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Attendees of this event will receive a diabetes screening, a blood pressure and pulse check, sleep disorder risk assessment, risk-reduction plan, a full lipid profile, including total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides. Participants will leave the screening with results in-hand, and a plan of action. Pre-registration is required for this event. The cost to participate is $10, and can be paid at the event.
