    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
United Financial Holds Financial Reality Fair for Local Schools

St. John's Lutheran School of Midland recently hosted a financial fair, presented by United Financial Credit Union. St. John’s Lutheran middle-school students, as well as students from three other area parochial schools, participated in the program.

The event was organized by United Financial Credit Union, Auburn Branch Manager Robin Naugle, who said, “We love sharing financial education with our future adults. Helping them succeed in life is our goal.”

The program, called Money Masters Middle School Reality Fair from the Michigan Credit Union League, recreates real-life situations in the city of Reality. Students begin by choosing an occupation and accompanying salary from a fishbowl, followed by a spinning a wheel to determine their family situation (married/single and number of children). Students must then visit a series of stations and make decisions about routine expenses including housing, transportation, insurance, food, clothing and fun stuff like toys and vacations.

St. John’s Principal Brad Massey said, “We are happy to host students from several area schools. It was nice to watch our students in grades 5-8 move amongst others and learn about budgeting.”

Fifth-grade St. John’s student Hannah Lewis said, “I learned it’s really hard being an adult, managing money is not easy at all!”

Brenden Bass from the United Financial Credit Union, Auburn branch oversaw the “health insurance” station at the financial fair and noted, “A lot of students didn’t enjoy this station because there isn’t a physical outcome for their money, but it is one of the fees required for life."

In addition to staff from several branches of United Financial Credit Union, there were volunteers at the stations from several local businesses, including Melissa Jammer from Chronicled Keepsakes Photography, Lori Carroll from Harbour Light Photography and Kevin Sims from UFirst Financial/RichMark Private Wealth Management.

United Financial Credit Union was founded in 1964 to serve a small group of tool and die workers in the Bridgeport area. United Financial currently has seven locations located in Bay City, Bridgeport, Saginaw Township, Chesaning, Freeland and Auburn and serves over 23,000 members.
