2021 saw another strong year of community involvement and informative programming for 100.5 & 790 Newsradio WSGW which serves Saginaw-Bay City-Midland, Michigan with a population of 390,000! We provided continued coverage of the recovery, rebuilding, and litigation in the wake of a 500-year flood in 2020 which caused two dams to fail, draining two lakes, and flooding the village of Sanford and much of the city of Midland causing the evacuation of over 10,000 residents.
The news talk station is a huge backer of local non-profits. Our proudest accomplishments included helping raise $125,000 for two homeless shelters through a Summer Relief campaign and a Christmastime Radiothon. Our Food for Families campaign in the Fall collected food at 20 retail locations and over $4,000 for the Salvation Army. We supported fundraising efforts for Saginaw Area Fireworks, emceed the fireworks, and aired the soundtrack for the Independence Day Fireworks.
WSGW has 4 news staffers covering a challenging area with three significant cities in three separate counties. Ours is the largest commercial radio news staff in Michigan outside of Detroit.
WSGW won both a NAB Crystal Award and a Service to America Award for 2019 and was a finalist for another Service to America Award in 2020. WSGW won MAB Station of the Year honors in 2021 for the eighth time and won eight first place Broadcast Excellence Awards including Use of New Media. This is the second consecutive year that WSGW has been named a Marconi finalist in the Medium Market Station of the Year category.
